Brick couple to be sentenced Monday over Sammy the dog

jfsamBRICK — The fate of a township couple who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in connection with Sammy, a cocker spaniel left in a trash bag, is due to be decided on Monday.

In August, Keith E. and Shauna Ewing Morgan pleaded guilty to various charges as part of a plea agreement. The pair is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Robert M. LePore during a court hearing scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at the municipal building.

Keith Morgan, 56, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and filing a false police report, while his wife, Shauna, 43, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty. The charges carry a fine of $1,000, a maximum of six months in jail and up to three years of probation.

Martin Mondoker, an administrator for the Sammy the Cocker Spaniel’s Facebook page, said he hopes the pair receives the maximum penalty.

“Something has to be done. You are seeing more and more cases like this,’’ said Mondoker, 50, of Colts Neck.

Sammy’s plight attracted widespread attention. Keith Morgan, who lives on Sawmill Road, claimed he found the 15-year-old cocker spaniel on the side of a Wall road in a plastic bag on March 14. Morgan took the dog to the Associated Humane Societies in Tinton Falls and, for 24 hours, he was touted as a hero.

But the next day, Morgan and his wife were charged by the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
